The government has recently legislated the biggest reforms to super in 10 years. The new rules will come into effect on 1 July 2017 and may have a significant impact on your retirement planning and goals.
You have one last opportunity to maximise your super savings before the new rules apply
Until 30 June 2017 you have one last window of opportunity to maximise your non-concessional contributions to super under the current rules. This means you can contribute up to $540,000 of after-tax money under the three-year bring forward provision, but this is your last chance.
As of 1 July 2017 the contributions limit will be reduced – not only will the limit be capped at $300,000 over three years but if you have more than $1.6 million in your super, you won’t be able to make any non-concessional contributions at all.
It’s important to reconsider your contribution strategy right now
You might not have been planning to make any large contributions to your super this year, but if you don’t act before June you could miss your final chance to provide a significant boost to your long-term retirement savings. If you have money in a bank account or term deposit, or are thinking about selling an asset and putting the money into super – now is the time to seek advice.
While making additional contributions won’t be right for everyone, it’s worth taking some time to consider whether you could benefit from acting on this limited opportunity.
The super changes present a number of complex scenarios, and that’s where our supported self managed super fund (SMSF) service could help. To understand how it works, take advantage of our free consult – our experts will highlight the changes you need to be aware of and help you understand what they could mean for your future retirement savings.
