Broadband plan will put Malcolm in the middle

Building the NBN may make the former opposition leader look like an economic saviour in a downturn. 

It's a counter-intuitive proposition but the second most important person in the Abbott government, after the PM that is, may well prove to be Malcolm Turnbull.

Before rejecting the idea, consider the single most important development we can expect to occur over the next three years. It is that we will see the end of the greatest investment boom in Australian history.

The long-run average of investment in our mining sector has been around 2 per cent of GDP. Currently, it is running at around 8 per cent. By the end of 2016 that figure will be a lot closer to two than eight.
