Why US slowdown won't be fixed anytime soon
Economist Robert Gordon has identified four main causes of the slowdown in growth in the US, coupled with what he describes as faltering innovation.
Back in 1900, an American engineer, John Elfreth Watkins Jr, published an article in the Ladies Home Journal entitled "What May Happen in the Next Hundred Years?".
Watkins claimed to have surveyed "the most learned and conservative minds in America . . . the wisest and most careful men in our greatest institutions of science and learning".
He told his readers: "These prophecies will seem strange, almost impossible."
